BAPTISMS

At Christ Church Colbury, we welcome all enquiries about baptism (also called christening) for adults, children and babies.

It is an important moment in our lives and very much an occasion to be celebrated. In the ceremony of baptism, God touches us with his love. It gives us a clear place among his people and is a significant moment on our life-long journey of faith.

In baptism we remember that God promises to be with us throughout our lives and to bring us to his eternal life. In return, we seek to grow in our relationship with God through prayer, by listening to his word, and allowing his gifts to grow in us.

We believe that God calls us all to share in his love for the people around us, family, friends, community and throughout the world, through acts of consideration, service and generosity.

Children who are too young to profess the Christian faith are baptised on the understanding that they are going to be brought up as Christians within the family of the Church, taught about Jesus and encouraged to pray.

For this reason, it is traditional for parents to choose godparents to support them as their children grow towards maturity and independence. There is no limit to the number of godparents but we suggest that at least two should be present at the ceremony.

Adults being baptised may wish to bring along someone to support and encourage them as well.

FUNERALS

The death of a loved one affects us deeply. We can support you in the arranging and planning of a funeral and, if you need us, through the process of bereavement.

Normally you will have first made contact with an undertaker who will then contact the church office to make the arrangements to hold the funeral at a time that is convenient to all concerned.

The officiating priest will arrange a meeting to plan the service with the family, including hymns, music and readings, to make the occasion as personal as possible.

The funeral service usually takes about 30-45 minutes and the Committal would then follow at a local crematorium or cemetery or with burial in the churchyard. In the case of a cremation, arrangements can be made, if wished, for the ashes to be interred in the churchyard at a later date.

If a funeral service has been held elsewhere, a memorial service of thanksgiving can be held in the church.
